As Queen Moon continues preparing for Eclipsa's trial, Star bursts in, still reeling from the revelation that Miss Heinous is Eclipsa's daughter. Moon doesn't believe it, dismissing it as a story that Mina Loveberry made up, and is more concerned with the party that Star threw at the monster temple. As Star accuses her mother of sending Rhombulus to stop the party, Moon levitates her out of the room and shuts the door so she can focus on the trial.
Before Star can go back in and confront her mother again, her father King River stops her. In an effort to get Star's mind off of the issues surrounding Eclipsa and Miss Heinous, River suggests they go on a hunting trip together. Star protests, but River drags her away.
Deep in the Forest of Certain Death, River tells Star that this is a very important hunt and that she can go back to dealing with Eclipsa once it's over. He also swallows her compact phone so she can't call her mother. They meet with a friend of River's named Eddie and tell him they're hunting a creature called the Bogbeast of Boggabah. Eddie leaves to "alert the others" while River and Star make preparations to hunt down the Bogbeast. Before leaving, Eddie advises Star to listen for the Bogbeast's song as a sign that it's nearby.
As part of their preparations to face the Bogbeast, River and Star sit in a sauna to sweat out their fear, coat themselves in camouflage, braid each other's hair, and paint markings on their bodies with tree sap. Star finds the whole process very tedious. When she hears the Bogbeast's song, she suggests confronting it right away, but River refuses to deviate from their hunting rituals. When Star messes up a small detail of the sap-painting ritual, River says they have to start all over from the beginning. They go through the entire process all over again, but River throws his back out and retires to his sleeping bag, saying they'll start fresh in the morning.
In the middle of the night, Star hears the Bogbeast's song again and decides to confront it once and for all. With a hunting outfit and her wand turned into a hunting bow and arrow, Star pursues the monster to a foggy bog and gets trapped in the mud. As she sinks into the mud, she sees a tall figure with antlers approaching through the fog. However, when the figure places a crown of antlers on Star's head, it is revealed to be River, and he presents Star herself as the Bogbeast of Boggabah to a crowd of Mewman people.
As it turns out, the Bogbeast of Boggabah is not real; the Bogbeast hunt is just a game where someone dresses up as the Bogbeast and gets chased through the woods. River tells Star that her impulsiveness and tendency to rush into things without thinking may be her specialty, but they are also good traits of a Bogbeast. He hopes she learns from this hunt not to be so spontaneous and stand in her own way of her goals. As the crowd of Mewmans prepares to have a bog party, King River says he must keep his promise to Star and return her to the castle, but Star decides to join the party anyway.
The next morning, Star goes back to her mother's room and knocks on the door.
